The Leaking of The Fault in Our Stars ›

fishingboatproceeds:

Early this morning, I learned that BN.com had accidentally shipped out The Fault in Our Stars, which will be published on January 10th, to many people who’d preordered the book. Although efforts are being made to stop shipments wherever possible, some of these people will likely receive the book early.

This is disappointing for a variety of reasons, but mostly because we have worked very hard to make sure that everyone who wants to read TFiOS will be able to do so at the same time. This book has been making its way into the world for more than a decade, and I do not want any reader’s relationship with it tarnished by leaks or spoilers—particularly those readers who’ve preordered the book and intend to read it immediately upon publication.

But mistakes happen. The people who made this error were not bad or incompetent people, and they were not acting maliciously. We all make mistakes, and it is not my wish to see Barnes and Noble or any of their employees vilified.

If you happen to receive an early copy of The Fault in Our Stars, you should of course feel free to read it. (You should also feel free to wait until January 10th.) But please do not spoil it for other readers. Please don’t share quotes or reveal plot or anything else that might negatively affect other people’s reading experience.

I’m disappointed about this, but as my brother reminded me this morning, I am very, very lucky. I have the best readers in the world, readers who care not only about my books but also about each other. So thank you, in advance, for not sharing spoilers—whether you read The Fault in Our Stars before or after January 10th.

If you’d like to preorder a signed copy of The Fault in Our Stars, you can do so from your local independent bookstore, from Amazon, and, yes, even fromBarnes and Noble.

So, uh, I ended up designing covers in that same style for every John Green novel.

John Green discusses the power of symbolism and metaphor by talking about self-consciousness, the nature of empathy, and The Catcher in the Rye.

There’s this sociologist I like named Peter Berger, and he wrote in one of his books, “The difference between dogs and people is that dogs know how to be dogs.” And it seems to me that one of the ways we don’t come into this world knowing how to be a person is that we don’t really know what to do about empathy.

Like, the weird thing about self-consciousness is that you become aware of the fact that you can never fully feel someone else’s pain, and that someone else can never fully feel your pain.

This is probably my favorite vlogbrother video. Full transcript here.

Just signed my name for the 100,000th time.

It’s now one of my favorite vlogbrothers videos ever. This really is the best advice you can give anyone.

And all at once I knew how Margo Roth Spiegelman felt when she wasn’t being Margo Roth Spiegelman: she felt empty. She felt the unscaleable wall surrounding her. I thought of her asleep on the carpet with only that jagged sliver of sky above her. Maybe Margo felt comfortable there because Margo the person lived like that all the time: in an abandoned room with blocked-out windows, the only light pouring in through holes in the roof. Yes. The fundamental mistake I had always made—and that she had, in fairness, always led me to make—was this: Margo was not a miracle. She was not an adventure. She was not a fine and precious thing. She was a girl.

We all hope so.

Above:

Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan

- I just finished Looking for Alaska a week ago which makes this the only John Green I have yet to read. I’ve always been tempted to get it but the price makes me think twice. Immediately after finishing Looking for Alaska, seeing tons of vlogbrothers videos and watching all those p4a videos - I learned that John Green really is made out of awesome. So, I got myself a Christmas present.

Blankets by Craig Thompon

- Also something I’ve always wanted to get my hands on but the price wouldn’t let me. My brother got this for me as a Christmas gift. Can’t wait to read this.

Below:

I still buy CDs for collection’s sake. (I know CDs suck compared to vinyl but I do not have a record player, I’m sorry. I really wish I did, though. )

This is Happening by LCD Soundsystem

- A. K. A. the best album to come out this year that isn’t My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. I was looking around at the record bar and I freaked out when I saw it.

OK Computer by Radiohead

- A. K. A. one of the best albums of all freakin’ time. Duh, it’s Radiohead. (It’s obvious how unbiased I am.) I just need The Bends and Amnesiac to complete my collection. No, I will not get Pablo Honey.

Today is a good day. Hurray for materialism.

*EDIT: There are shitloads of copies of John Green books in Fully Booked in the Fort. There are, like, 30 copies of the supposedly impossible-to-find Looking for Alaska sitting there waiting for their new owners. Go get them, friends.

PROJECT FOR AWESOME HAS MADE 35,000 DOLLARS TODAY. THIS IS JOHN GREEN HAPPY DANCING.

If over 25 thousand of you can reblog a silly .gif of Charlie talking about how he likes to eat and laugh, you can go here and read more about p4a if you are not aware. Otherwise, you can just get back to youtube and continue commenting/liking/favoriting! There’s a bunch of good causes, guys, and it doesn’t take that much of your time. I’m sure you’re all bored, anyway.

A not-so-blue Monday

  • So I went to Fully Booked today to buy a book for a friend.
  • Because National doesn’t have what I was looking for.
  • So yeah, I went to Fully Booked to buy Paper Towns, which now happens to be one of my favorite books ever, as a birthday gift for a really good friend.
  • And beside it lay (lied? laid?) a copy Looking For Alaska.
  • LOOKING FOR ALASKA.
  • (I still haven’t found the time the finish my copy. School is hell. I suck, I’m sorry.)
  • And that book is one of the hardest books to find these days. I think mostly because of this quote.
  • (To be honest, that’s how I first heard of the book myself.)
  • Anyway, so I looked around and found a copy of It’s Kind of a Funny Story.
  • Something I’ve really wanted to buy for the longest time because of a) the pretty cover b) I’ve heard good things about it c) the movie looks interesting and d) the pretty cover.
  • So I begged my mom to buy it for me, despite the fact that I still have a huge stack of books waiting to be read.
  • Anyway. While I was waiting for them to wrap one of the books, I asked around to see if they had Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs.
  • AND THEY DID. I really wanted to buy it.
  • But a) we already paid for that other book and I don’t think my mom will let me buy two books for myself when I still have a lot of unread ones at home b) I don’t think my mom will be willing to buy me a book with the words ‘sex’ and ‘drugs’ in the title.
  • (Which is a bit sad. Anyway.)
  • I looked around again and found this hardcover compilation of Jonathan Safran Foer’s two books.
  • And it had a nice-looking cover, too. I’d probably buy it if I didn’t already have Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close. But I’ve also heard some really great things about Everything is Illuminated.
  • And in the comics section, they have that huge hardcover compilation of DC’s Wednesday comics.
  • I have a digital copy of the first few issues, and I’d buy it just for the great art.
  • Also, those Walking Dead Hardcovers were mocking me.
  • But I am poor.
  • I really wish I had money and/or could live in a bookstore.
  • The quality of this post is inversely proportional the the length.
  • Yeah.
  • (I apologize for any stupid grammatical errors. Lalala~)

…because nerds like us are allowed to be unironically enthusiastic about stuff… Nerds are allowed to love stuff, like jump-up-and-down-in-the-chair-can’t-control-yourself love it. Hank, when people call people nerds, mostly what they’re saying is ‘you like stuff.’ Which is just not a good insult at all. Like, ‘you are too enthusiastic about the miracle of human consciousness’.

“And I felt the unbroken like of me and her stretching back from our cribs to the dead guy to acquaintanceship to now.”

From the first sight to the circles in the grass to the comfort in disappointment to the distance created to the question asked to the night to remember to the patching up to the friction to now.

I found the holy grail. I have finally, finally found Looking for Alaska. Oh, dear God. Looking for freakin’ Alaska! The book I have been looking for since forever. I’ve heard lots of great things about this book and John Green. I asked around in all the bookstores I could go to but none of them ever seemed to have it. Then I heard that my friend had An Abundance of Katherines so I borrowed that instead but I did not like it. Then I bought Paper Towns and I absolutely loved the hell out of it. And now this.

It was sitting in the YA section of the Fully Booked in Greenhills. I freaked out like a little bitch when I saw it. Because I am huge dork. FYEAH I AM SO HAPPY.

Oh, and my awesome cousin lent me her DVDs and two of her books. Awesome day is totally freakin’ awesome.
