05.19.12 Inksurge: Design Talks @ Ayala Museum
Art date with Jethro Jamon! ♥ There will be more of these. (We wanted to sit in the front being the geeks that we are, but apparently those are reserved for important guests. Sad face.)
YAY. ♥ That’s okay, Alla. One day, we shall become important people too. Or maybe even the ones giving the talk. HAHA.
I made a deal with Alla that we should make a cover redesign of every new book we finish (despite the fact that we already have so many other projects that are either abandoned, on hiatus, or haven’t started at all). I thought it would encourage us (me at least) to read more and to practice designing more.
I finished 1Q84 last week and today I came up with this.

Its that time again!!!! DESIGN TALKS NANAMAN! :) and now our goodfriends REX & JOIS OF INKSURGE’s TURN!!!
TARA! LETS GO!!!!!! SEE YOU ALL THERE!! feel free to REBLOG!
INKSURGE is the blend of Rex Advincula and Joyce Tai. Both graduates of computer courses, (Rex is a B.S. in Information Technology, Jois is B.S. Computer Science and B.A. Computer Arts in San Francisco), they met in their day jobs for a local IT firm – where they both got bored in their day to day work and decided to take the leap: creating a backyard design studio, meeting in coffee shops, and working from computers stationed in their parents’ homes — forming Inksurge.
Working by the principle of good design being just the right brew of a strong idea steeped in research and well-crafted visuals, all created over the perfect cup of coffee (Rex takes it with sugar, Jois takes it with milk), the now full-fledged design shop’s portfolio includes websites, product packaging, print and illustration, commissioned art, even furniture and shoe designs for big names in fashion, music, arts, and services, both in the local and the international scene.
Driven by a surge of passion for design, experimentation, inking up new ideas and concocting unique imagery, the tandem has become a household icon in the local design sphere, also making waves globally — with work featured in several design books and publications in Singapore, United States, Spain, and Germany.Always wide awake, Inksurge is sure to be brewing up something new.

Lu Xinjian: City DNA
First of two posts looking at the work of artist Lu Xinjan from Shanghai.
Lu creates works based on abstract arrangements of symbols aesthetically, which are actually based on information and reality. In the City DNA series, maps of famous cities from around the world are codified with Lu’s unique design grammar.
You can check out all of Lu’s current collection of the ongoing series here
Next post on the artist’s work: Invisible Poems

I’ve been obsessed with type lately. Now only if I could get myself to do my real design homework.
